Is Donald Trump a Christian?

Share:

Over the years, one of the most frequent questions posed to me by Christians is whether I think President Trump has accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. I have been honored to pray with the president many times, and I have reached my own conclusion.

Most Christians already believe that the president has done more to protect faith, family, and freedom than any previous president. His Supreme Court appointees ended the lie that there was a right to abortion in our Constitution. He has sided consistently with parents’ rights to protect their children from LGBTQ propaganda. The list goes on and on. But many Christians still want to know about Donald Trump’s personal faith.

This question rose to prominence again in October 2025. President Trump, while flying on Air Force One, held an impromptu “press conference” with reporters on the plane.

He had recently brokered a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war, as well as completed other peace deals. Reporters wanted to know if he thought these accomplishments would get him into Heaven.

President Trump replied, in part, “I think I’m not maybe Heaven-bound . . . I’m not sure I’m going to be able to make it to Heaven, but I’ve made life a lot better for a lot of people.”1

This response was disappointing to many Christians, particularly among evangelicals. As the old hymn says, “What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus.”2

Some Christians were worried that President Trump didn’t know that the way to get into Heaven is not by works, but by accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.

Three days after the exchange on Air Force One, Franklin Graham, a close friend of the president and member of the Religious Liberty Commission, sent President Trump a personal letter. It was sincere, and I am sure it touched the president’s heart.

Here is what Franklin Graham wrote:

Dear President Trump,

Congratulations! The cease-fire between Israel and Hamas and the hostages being returned home are incredible accomplishments. Your leadership is historic. This is an answer to much prayer. Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers” (Matthew 5:9)—and Mr. President, that is what you are.

This week you commented to the media that you might not be heaven bound. Maybe you responded in jest, but it is an important issue to know for certain that your soul is secure and will spend eternity in the presence of God.

The only One who can save us from Hell is Jesus Christ. You can’t save yourself; I can’t save myself. Good works, prominence, success—none of these get us to Heaven. The only way to Heaven is through the shed blood of Jesus Christ.

God requires us to turn from our sins and, by faith, believe in our heart that Jesus came to earth, died on the cross for our sins, was buried, and God raised Him to life on the third day. If you accept that by faith and invite Him to come into your heart, you ARE heaven bound, I promise you.

The Bible says, “if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9).

You continue to be in our prayers.

As always, your friend,

Franklin Graham3

This weekend, the letter suddenly drew national attention. President Trump celebrated Palm Sunday by publicly posting the letter from Graham on his social media. By doing so, the president shared the Gospel message with our entire nation on the day we celebrate Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem. One week later, Christ, the perfect lamb (1 Peter 1:19), would be crucified. He took on the death we deserved. By accepting Him, we win eternal life in Heaven.

President Trump has done more to advance the Gospel and to protect religious liberty than any other president in our history. And, yes, I believe he has accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, and he is, in fact, Heaven-bound.

We join Franklin Graham in promising to continue to pray for him, for the First Lady, and for our country as we strive to make America great again by making America Godly again.
