The Blade video game has received an upsetting update, as a new report suggests Microsoft is ready to announce a wave of layoffs that could affect the title.
What is the latest status on the Blade video game?
According to a new report from Tom Warren at Verge, Microsoft is planning to announce a wave of layoffs for its Xbox studios and employees next week. The layoffs will lead to studio closures and or spin-offs of studios, mergers, and canceled games. One of the many games in the danger of being canceled is Arkane Studios‘ Marvel’s Blade, which was briefly teased back in 2023 at The Game Awards.
The Verge’s article notes that Microsoft wants to cancel the game as part of cost cutting measures, but is also exploring options to sell Arkane Studios instead, along with potentially spinning off Compulsion Games, Double Fine, and Ninja Theory.
As for the Blade game, little is known about it in totality. The game was originally revealed as a surprise in 2023, and was supposed to release this year. The Verge’s report notes that the game’s development slipped to 2027, and is now running over budget, which is likely leading to Microsoft looking to cut ties with the game and studio.
As far as Microsoft goes, the report mentions that Microsoft is planning for a wave of layoffs that will likely reshape its entire gaming division. The layoffs will start on July 6, with rumors suggesting that over 1,000 job losses could be planned.
