Coldplay brought celestial firepower to the Bay Area this past weekend, launching the North American leg of their Music of the Spheres World Tour with a historic double-header at Stanford Stadium — the venue’s first-ever foray into live music.
On Saturday, May 31 and Sunday, June 1, the British superstars transformed the legendary sports ground into a technicolor dreamscape, playing to two sold-out crowds under the California sky. The back-to-back nights marked a landmark moment not just for the band, but for the stadium itself, which until now had only echoed with the roar of football crowds.
Coldplay delivered an ecstatic set drawing from Moon Music — their latest global No. 1 album — while dipping deep into their vast catalogue of anthems: “Yellow,” “Viva La Vida,” “Fix You,” “Paradise,” “The Scientist,” and “A Sky Full of Stars” lit up the night. The band’s signature immersive spectacle was in full effect: LED wristbands pulsed in sync with lasers, confetti cannons, and stadium-sized bursts of fireworks.
Support came from rising stars Willow and Elyanna, both of whom captivated early audiences with genre-bending, emotionally charged sets that set the stage for the main event.
The Music of the Spheres World Tour has already made history, with over 12 million tickets sold worldwide — the most ever for a single tour. But beyond the record-breaking numbers, Coldplay continues to push boundaries in what a global arena show can be, emphasizing joy, inclusivity, and environmental responsibility.
The band’s climate commitments remain central to the tour. A recent sustainability update revealed a 59% cut in CO2e emissions per show compared to their 2016/17 run, exceeding their initial target of 50%. So far, more than 9 million trees have been planted globally, with another million currently in the ground. Full sustainability info is available at sustainability.coldplay.com.
DHL, the official logistics partner of the tour, is helping Coldplay drive toward a greener future — quite literally — with their support in reducing emissions.
With their Stanford Stadium shows now in the books, Coldplay’s North American run is officially underway — and if the opening weekend is any indication, the rest of the tour promises nothing short of cosmic.
