DELRAY BEACH, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2025 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — The “pride intersection” at NE 2nd Avenue and NE 1st Street in Delray Beach is not going anywhere — at least for now. The City of Delray Beach agreed during a City Commission meeting to fight a State of Florida directive to remove the rainbow colored “pavement markings.”

With no one opposing the plan to fight the State of Florida, resident after resident spoke in support of the intersection. The only negative comments were against what is believed to be what some are calling the homophobic Florida Governor Ron DeSantis whose Department of Transportation is threatening municipalities in the state.

“Delray Beach and other Florida municipalities are being extorted,” said retired Judge Rand Hoch, President of the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council (PBCHRC). “You have been told that unless queer art is removed at your expense, this administration will withhold millions of dollars in transportation funds needed to repair our aging infrastructure.”

The directive orders local governments to remove pride markings.

“If the pavement makings are not removed by September 3, 2025, the Florida Department of Transportation will remove them by any appropriate method necessary without further notice,” wrote Department of Transportation District Secretary Steven C. Braum. “You are further notified that if the markings are removed by the Department, all costs associated with the removal will be assessed against the City of Delray Beach. You may avoid these costs by removing the pavement markings and then notify the Department of compliance immediately.”

The Delray Beach City Attorney will argue at an administrative hearing in Orlando on September 2nd why he believes the state does not have the authority to order local governments to do anything with local roads.
