Deadly cane toads spreading across South Florida, putting pets at risk

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) — A deadly invasive species is spreading across South Florida and experts say it’s putting pets at serious risk.

Cane toads, also known as bufo toads, are showing up more frequently in neighborhoods across Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast.

While they may look harmless, these toads secrete a powerful toxin that can be deadly to dogs within minutes.

Experts say even a quick sniff or lick can expose a dog to the toxin.

“It takes anywhere between 2 to 15 minutes for the toxin to take place in the dog” said Austin Begon, a technician with Toad Busters.

Pet owners are urged to watch for symptoms like drooling, vomiting, loss of coordination, foaming at the mouth, and in severe cases, seizures or trouble breathing.

Experts say the spread is being driven in part by rapid development across the region.

New neighborhoods with ponds, lakes, and outdoor lighting create the perfect environment for cane toads to thrive — giving them places to breed, hide, and feed.

“They breed in residential ponds, lakes and water features pretty much our homes are exactly what they’re looking for,” Begon explained.

When threatened, cane toads release a milky toxin from glands on their body — a substance that can quickly impact a dog’s nervous system.

If a dog comes into contact with a toad, experts say immediate action is critical.

Pet owners should wipe out the dog’s mouth with a damp cloth or paper towel — focusing on the gums, teeth and roof of the mouth — and head to an emergency veterinarian right away.

Experts warn against rinsing a dog’s mouth with water, as it may push toxins further down the throat.

Prevention is key.

Pet owners are encouraged to keep dogs on a leash at night, check their yards before letting pets outside, remove standing water, limit outdoor lighting, and clear dense landscaping where toads can hide.

Services like Toad Busters also offer removal and prevention options for homeowners dealing with infestations.

Experts say awareness is critical — especially as cane toads continue to spread across the region.
