Man of War: From Hip-Hop Heavyweight to Battling for His Life

Man of War—known for his abstract lyricism and dynamic delivery—was first introduced nationally in 1999 through the “Rising Sons” music video. It was produced by the then-new label Syntax Records. Since then, listeners have come to appreciate his unique blend of rapid-fire verses and intricate patterns, inviting them to explore his deep symbolism and evocative themes.

In The Beginning

At the time, Syntax Records had neither distribution, nor anything to distribute. The idea was to accelerate the label’s launch by creating a broadcast-quality music video featuring raw, unapologetic emcees representing their faith. The video, showcasing a white, Black, and Hispanic emcee, resonated with viewers. It quickly gained traction, landing in rotation on local and national shows worldwide.

The plan worked. Just months after releasing the video, Syntax Records secured international distribution through Diamante Music Group, the same pivotal company that launched the careers of P.O.D., Cross Movement, Supertones, Gospel Gangstaz, MXPX, and many more.

Man of War joined the roster and continued to release thought-provoking music, taking listeners on a distinctive sonic journey. He later became part of the trio Def Shepard, alongside RedCloud and MaxOne of Sackcloth Fashion. Each emcee held their own with neck-breaking delivery, but when they were together, it became an Olympic event.

An Eye For Talent

Beyond his talent on the microphone, Man of War had an eye for spotting emerging talent. He could have even pursued a successful career in A&R. In fact, several prominent figures in the music industry first collaborated with him. For example, DJ Promote—who now tours with Lecrae—did his first-ever tour with Man of War. They even worked on a project together called Mextape.

In preparation for the tour, Man of War spray paints his van.

Despite his tough appearance, Man of War is known for his generous and gracious nature. He loves helping others, and it shows. After his tenure at Syntax Records, he took his experience and knowledge to launch his own label and develop new talent.

The Servant

Though he’s chosen to remain underground in place of industry accolades, his servant’s heart has earned him something more valuable: lifelong friendships within the industry. He has always been a team player, ready to lend a hand. One notable example was when his recording session at Syntax Studios was interrupted by a sewage flood caused by city maintenance. Undeterred, Man of War jumped into action, helping clean the disgusting mess.

What Happened?

Now, it’s our turn to return the favor to Man of War and his family.

According to a post from Grace Chapel Scottsbluff’s Facebook page, on August 27th, Man of War was hospitalized after experiencing unfamiliar symptoms. He suffered a stroke and was placed in a medically induced coma. Surgery was performed, and a line was installed to drain excess fluid from his brain.

According to his eldest daughter, Gianna, Three weeks later on September 18th, Man of War was transferred to a long-term care facility in Denver, three hours from his family. While he has not yet spoken, he has begun to communicate through blinking, hand squeezes, and other small gestures.

Man of War is the primary breadwinner for his family. The combination of lost income, medical bills, and his relocation has taken a toll on the Orozco family. If you’re able, his eldest son, Josiah, has set up a GoFundMe, which has impressively already raised over $9,000 at the time of this article.

If you’re unable to contribute financially, you can still help by keeping him in your prayers and supporting his music, along with the releases from War Records.

Providentially, Man of War and I had just discussed releasing two songs already completed, to give him a little break to work on some upcoming War Records projects. The first track, A New Dawn, is available on all streaming platforms now, and the second, Look at Dad, will be released on October 25.
