The popular Croydon Photography Forum returns this month, as Lenses of Croydon launches its Black History Month exhibition, Sound Clash: A Fusion of Hip Hop and Reggae.

The photography exhibition opens at the Broad Green Hub on Monday, and delves into two of the world’s most renowned and celebrated music genres, both deeply rooted in communities of the global majority. It highlights leading black artists of our time, including Coolio, Bounty Killer, Outcast and Spragga Benz, all captured through the lenses of photographers Teemax and Bampson.

These talented photographers have documented their favourite music for decades, working with Grammy, BET, MTV, NAACP, Billboard Music, and MOBO award-winning artists. Many A-list musicians featured in this exhibition have achieved gold, platinum and diamond sales, having some having sold more than 10million copies of their singles or albums.

“Lenses of Croydon is excited to be making a return to the Croydon art scene and will once more be bringing talented photographers to Croydon for regular talks, workshops and other creative gatherings,” said Lee Townsend, Lenses of Croydon’s founder, in announcing the Sound Clash Exhbition, which is being held at the Broad Green Hub from Monday October 14 to Thursday October 31, from 11am to 5pm.

The exhibition showcases historical portraits and performance documentation of Black musical stars, past and present, who have made their mark in history through their songwriting and performance styles.

Next Wednesday, October 16, from 6.45pm to 9pm, Lenses of Croydon’s popular Croydon Photography Forum will offer the public a chance to hear from Teemax and Bampson as they discuss their careers and share the fascinating stories behind some of the images featured in the exhibition.

The Croydon Photography Forum event is free, with light refreshments provided.

Tickets for the Forum can be booked by clicking here. Tickets are limited and will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis.

There will be a cash-only fundraising raffle on the night, where lucky winners will go home with an original signed print from one of the photographers.

“We’re thankful to the Big Local Broad Green for partnering with us on this exhibition and helping to create opportunities for our members and other local artists to exhibit their work,” Townsend said.

The Broad Green Hub is at 38 Keeley Road, Croydon CR2 1TF.
