WASHINGTON, D.C. (WCTV) – President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson spoke publicly Monday about U.S. Rep. Neal Dunn’s health during a press conference, describing what they called a “grim” outlook before Dunn underwent emergency heart treatment.
While taking questions from reporters, Trump referenced a member of Congress who had been “very ill,” then deferred to Johnson to name the lawmaker.
“Congressman Neal Dunn of Florida had had some real health challenges, and it was very serious and…had had a pretty grim diagnosis,” Johnson said.
As the exchange continued, Johnson described the situation as terminal. Trump quickly chimed in and said, “He would be dead by June.”
Johnson immediately responded that the remark had not been public.
Trump went on to say Dunn’s condition involved “a heart problem,” and he referenced doctors he described as White House physicians getting involved. Trump and Johnson both said Dunn was taken to Walter Reed for emergency surgery.
“They gave him more stents,” Trump said, adding that Dunn later appeared to have renewed energy.
Johnson told reporters Trump encouraged Dunn and suggested involving his doctors. Johnson said Dunn was taken to Walter Reed for emergency surgery and later returned to Washington with what Johnson described as “a new lease on life.”
WCTV has reached out to Dunn’s chief of staff and communications team multiple times for comment regarding rumors of health complications, but has been told the office does not comment on personal matters. WCTV reached out again Monday afternoon following the president’s remarks and had not received a response as of publication.
