MADISON, (WKOW) — Officers engaged in lengthy negotiations with an armed man barricaded inside an east Madison home on Saturday.
The incident unfolded on Bay Ridge Drive around 4:10 p.m. A man allegedly threatened his father with a knife and took his phone.The father managed to escape to a neighbor’s home and called for assistance.
Upon arrival, officers learned the son was experiencing a mental health crisis and had multiple knives hidden throughout the home. The man refused to leave the residence.
Special Weapons and Tactics team members and crisis negotiators responded to the scene. They spent hours attempting to convince the man to exit the home voluntarily.
Authorities used an electronic control device and less lethal options. A K-9 unit was eventually deployed, assisting in taking the man into custody. Officers consulted with mental health professionals during the incident.
The man was medically cleared before being taken to the Dane County Jail. A significant police presence was noted in the area for several hours.
The investigation is ongoing.
