WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – President Donald Trump on Wednesday pressed Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) to pass the SAVE America Act, saying Thune needs to “be a leader” to advance the election overhaul legislation.
Trump’s comments came a day after Thune expressed concerns that there is not enough support for the bill in the Senate.
“Well, he’s got to be a leader. You know, he’s a leader. He’s got to get him. It’s the most popular bill I’ve ever seen put before Congress,” Trump said.
Trump described the bill’s provisions as including voter ID requirements, a citizenship requirement to vote, a ban on transgender athletes in women’s sports, restrictions on gender-affirming care for minors, and limits on mail-in ballots except for military voters.
Congressional Republicans say the SAVE America Act would prevent voter fraud. Voting rights groups say the bill — which would require proof of citizenship nationwide to register to vote — is burdensome to voters.
The legislation is currently six votes short of a majority needed to change Senate rules altering the 60-vote threshold to break a potential Democratic-led filibuster.
