1000xRESIST is all in on story, and this laser focus allows it to tell one of the most captivating and intriguing experiences you can have in video games. This sci-fi adventure sees an alien disease almost wipe out humanity, but one person is immune, and they rebuild society underground by cloning her. Combining visual novel elements with exploration, it’s not the most challenging game to play, but its narrative more than makes it worthwhile.

If you’re looking for a chilled out puzzle game to wind down with, A Monster’s Expedition comes highly recommended. It’s one of those puzzlers with a seemingly straightforward set of mechanics, but it uses them in increasingly smart ways to really test your brainpower. Set across hundreds of tiny islands you need to navigate by pushing logs into the water, its forgiving nature and gentle presentation make it a lovely game to get lost in.

Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure is a delightfully inventive puzzle game that weaves in a neat narrative to pull you through. Playing as a character that literally moves the world around her as she goes, this is effectively a series of slide puzzles set within a fleshed out world full of whimsical character. Always building on its core idea in imaginative ways, this is brilliant fun from start to finish.

Like a captain going down with their ship, Ubisoft has remained loyal to the classic Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag experience in this new Resynced version. While many of the included games may border on unplayable from a modern perspective, the painstaking attention to detail in Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration is extremely easy to appreciate. The museum-like carousel of content, from interviews through to original artwork, is presented so handsomely that you can’t not get swept up in Atari’s dramatic story. And the fact that there over 100 of the company’s most famous titles, emulated excellently with their original instruction manuals available to pore over, adds playable context to a lot of the content. This is just an impressive overall experience that will appeal to those who lived through the rise (and fall) of Atari, as well as younger players eager to learn a little more about one of the industry’s true pioneers.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a role-playing masterclass in almost every aspect that matters. At its best, it’s one of the most deeply engaging RPGs you’ll ever play, and even though its methodical pacing won’t be for everyone, it sets the bar so high in terms of player freedom. Forging your own path to the infamous city of Baldur’s Gate makes for a truly memorable journey, stacked with fantastic characters and superb storytelling. A defining example of its genre.

Anyone who had a Nintendo DS back in the day knows that it boasts a little selection of Castlevania games that are some of the very best in the series — and Castlevania Dominus Collection gives PlayStation loyalists a chance to sample their delights. Featuring Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, Order of Ecclesia, and Haunted Castle, it’s a generous package offering hours of fun exploration, secrets, and boss fights to uncover. With gorgeous pixel graphics, weapon builds to learn, and enemy designs that continually delight, plus some excellent maps to explore and uncover, this is a fantastic little collection that should please any Metroidvania fan.

From the makers of TowerFall Ascension, Celeste is a pure platformer that provides a stern challenge. Using a straightforward set of moves, it does a lot with very little, but it’s not just gameplay where it impresses. Madeline’s climb up Celeste Mountain is both literal and metaphorical as she struggles to overcome her inner demons. Wonderfully pairing a touching story with rock solid platforming, this is one indie adventure that’ll stay with you.

If you’re after a striking and unique puzzle game, Chants of Sennaar should be high on your list. With a focus on understanding and translating a series of fictional languages, you make progress in this game by piecing together the meaning of symbols and characters throughout the world. It has a great visual style and an intriguing narrative to boot.

Dave the Diver, like the sea, is far deeper than you think it is. It charms with its attractive visuals and addictive loop of diving for fish and running a restaurant, but it never rests on its laurels, always finding new ways to enhance the fun. There’s never a dull moment, whether it’s a whole new feature expanding the gameplay, an unexpected new story beat, or another hilarious cutscene to enjoy. It’s this constant reinvention and surprise that makes the game so compelling, even through the occasional rougher moments. If you’ve yet to experience it for yourself, we’d highly encourage that you take the plunge.

Dragon Quest Builders 2 improves upon the first game in pretty much every way. This spin-off combines the RPG trappings of Dragon Quest with Minecraft-style building and survival mechanics, resulting in a robust and addictive adventure. With a better story and characters, smoother progression, and charming presentation, this is a successful offshoot of the historic franchise.

Happy to see Halls of Torment get a mention. That and Yet Another Zombie Survivors are two of my current favorites. The first has that classic Diablo feel, the enemies/loot all feel like they were heavily inspired by old Diablo. The Zombies one is just pure and chaos for the sake of both, it’s doing very well on console. Halls might be my favorite overall, it’s a little slow to start but like other games in the genre things pick up once you get into the flow. Dying at the start is also normal, there’s a learning curve there too. I did stick with the torment and eventually got stronger, better gear/classes, it’s a blast.
