Pop Mart and Sony Pictures have confirmed they are moving ahead on a feature based on the collectible monster figure, with Paddington and Wonka director Paul King attached to direct.

The live-action-CGI hybrid project is in early development and is based on the character from Beijing-based retailer Pop Mart’s The Monsters universe. King will co-write the screenplay with Dear Evan Hansen writer Steven Levenson, and serve as producer alongside Michael Schaefer and Wenxin She.

Kasing Lung, the Hong Kong illustrator who created Labubu and The Monsters, will serve as an executive producer and Brittany Morrissey is overseeing for Sony Pictures. The project was announced at the Paris stop of The Monsters’ 10th anniversary global exhibition tour.

King has earned multiple Bafta nominations including best adapted screenplay for Paddington (2015), best British film and best adapted screenplay for Paddington 2 (2018), and Outstanding British Film for Wonka (2024).
