This Collection supports and amplifies research related to SDG 6.
This Scientific Reports Collection welcomes original research on Synthetic biology in the environment. Narrative review articles are also welcomed, to our sister journal Scientific Reviews. For further information, please view the ‘Participating Journals’ below.
This collection welcomes original research articles on engineered microbial systems, synthetic pathways, biosensors, biocontainment, ecological interactions of engineered organisms, and emerging technologies that advance synthetic biology for environmental treatment.
Engineered biological systems enable precise sensing, transformation, and recovery of pollutants and resources through synthetic biology, which expands the capabilities of traditional environmental technologies. Environmental applications include pollutant degradation, nutrient recycling, carbon sequestration, biosensing, and ecosystem restoration. They integrate microbiology and bioprocess engineering for safe and scalable solutions for sustainable environmental management.
