New and improved: NCDOT launches updated DriveNC website and mobile app :: WRAL.com

The North Carolina Department of Transportation has launched its newly redesigned DriveNC website and a new mobile app.

Drivers can now sign up for email alerts on customized routes. Other new features include viewing real-time messages on overhead digital highway signs and accessing live videos from more than 1,000 traffic cameras.

The new free DriveNC mobile app is available to download for iPhone and Android users. The goal is to help drivers navigate road closures and traffic disruptions more easily.

The new features also offer personalized experiences. Drivers will be allowed to make an account and add custom information based on preferred routes or areas. They can also add days of the week, times of day, and more. Automatic alerts to commercial apps like Waze, Apple, and Google Maps will continue in the new system.

“For more than 25 years, our current system has reliably served travelers across North Carolina,” said Kelly Wells, traveler information engineer for the department’s Traffic Systems Operations Unit. “This new platform will provide even greater capabilities to support our travelers and our partners.”

Drivers can select “New Features” in the top navigation bar on the website for helpful tutorials on how the new website works. According to the NCDOT, almost 1.4 million people used DriveNC.gov last year, totaling about 2.2 million website visits.
