Social media videos, 911 call provide details surrounding officer-involved shooting in Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – New video shows the moments before Metro Nashville Police officers shot and killed Jason Sexton over the weekend on Cheshire Drive.

Sexton was shot three times by a Metro SWAT officer after negotiations were unsuccessful.

Before the shooting

The day before and the day of his death, Sexton posted multiple videos to his Instagram account. The videos showed him with his sword antagonizing gas station workers.

Sexton also made cryptic posts that prompted his family to call 911.

“I’m getting ready to post a video of all hell breaking loose because someone assaulted him over a cup of coffee,” the family member said in the 911 call. “He’s mentally ill…and he said he’s going to turn into a Jedi.”

Sexton’s page shows multiple videos from the days leading up to his death of him harassing workers, brandishing his sword and even yelling slurs at workers.

Court records show Sexton also had a lengthy criminal record, including pending assault charges and an active warrant for his arrest prior to the shooting.

Standoff on Cheshire Drive

Metro Nashville officers pulled Sexton over on Cheshire Drive, where a neighbor watched the situation unfold. The neighbor said officers attempted to negotiate with Sexton for over an hour without success.

In video shared by the neighbor, Sexton appears to be yelling and displaying his sword multiple times. He also gestures toward a woman in a car who police say was being held against her will.

“He’s wreaking havoc. He’s threatening people. Somebody’s going to get hurt and I’m really concerned about this. I don’t know why he hasn’t been picked up yet,” Sexton’s family said in a 911 call.

Sexton was shot by a 12-year Nashville police veteran.

WSMV has spoken to the woman who was inside the car. She says she is doing OK given the circumstances.

The officer who shot Sexton has been decommissioned pending an investigation.
