The World Health Organization just shared some genuinely hopeful news: up to 45% of dementia cases worldwide could be prevented or delayed by addressing 14 risk factors within our control. In other words, dementia is not simply a matter of fate or bad luck, and much of the risk lies in everyday habits. Many of these factors overlap beautifully with heart health, since what is good for the heart is good for the brain. The list includes staying physically active, keeping your mind and social life engaged, not smoking, limiting alcohol, and eating a healthy diet. It also means managing blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, and weight, protecting your hearing and treating hearing loss, avoiding head injuries, and, in a newer addition, reducing exposure to air pollution. Addressing these earlier in life matters even more, but it is never too late to start, and every change helps.
