JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Florida Department of Transportation is taking measures to ensure the state’s highway system stays safe through a winter storm that could drop some snow a bit too close for comfort.

After the state experiences a weekend of weather impacts — including threats from rain, storms, wind and cold down here in our coverage area — the chillier weather left behind as another storm system gains strength in the Gulf will introduce the possibility of ice, sleet, freezing rain and even snow in North Florida.

FDOT District 3, which services northwest Florida, shared pictures on social media of cold-weather equipment — bridge deck sprayers and snowplows among them — which crews are preparing for the freeze.

Ensemble models show Jacksonville and areas west of it could be dealing with a 19% chance of getting an inch of show by Wednesday morning. Those chances rise significantly the further you go into the Panhandle.

Further south, back in Central Florida, an uptick in rain coverage is likely above all else as the peninsula at large could get anywhere from an inch or two of rainfall while the system crosses over.
