The decomposed remains found in a towed Tesla belonging to singer D4vd have been identified as those of 15-year-old Celeste Rivas, authorities say.
The girl, found Sept. 8 inside the front trunk of the vehicle at a Los Angeles tow yard, was identified through forensics. The county’s Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet determined how Rivas died, NBC Los Angeles reports.
“At this time, the LAPD does not have a crime classification from the coroner as to the mode or manner of death. Thus, we do not have any suspect information at this time,” the Los Angeles Police Department said in a statement.
Rivas was a teen from nearby Riverside County and was reported missing last year, according to investigators. She had not had any known communication following her disappearance.
Rivas’ death is being investigated as a homicide. No arrests had been made as of Thursday, Sept. 18.
D4vd, born David Burke, grew up in Houston after his family moved from Queens, New York when he was young. The singer-songwriter, 20, is known for blending alternative, R&B, and indie influences into his music. He first gained attention with his breakout hit “Romantic Homicide,” which went viral on TikTok and climbed the charts, showcasing his raw, emotional lyricism and moody soundscapes.
“D4vd has been informed about what’s happened. And, although he is still out on tour, he is fully cooperating with the authorities,” a representative for the singer said Tuesday.
The human remains were found while D4vd was in Minneapolis for his tour. Employees at the tow yard noticed a strong odor coming from the vehicle, which was towed after being abandoned in the Hollywood Hills for over a month.
The investigation is ongoing.
