Authorities in Florida are seeking tips from the public after “sky-high sneaker thieves” cut through the concrete roof of a mall to pull off a heist at a Champs Sporting Goods store.
“Not quite the Crown Jewels — but its clear these sneaker thieves put the same time and effort into their crime,” the Martin County Sheriff’s Office wrote alongside photos on Facebook, in a joking reference to a recent heist of the French Crown Jewels at the Louvre in Paris.
According to the sheriff’s office, the thieves cut through the concrete roof of the Treasure Coast Mall in Jensen Beach overnight Monday, dropping directly into a Champs Sporting Goods. They stole “hundreds” of pairs of Nike shoes, which were “bagged, tagged, thrown off the roof, and loaded into a getaway vehicle.”
Photos shared by the sheriff’s office show not only the hole in the roof, but also some merchandise that got “hastily” left behind.
Investigators are asking anyone with information, or who may have seen anything suspicious in or around the mall between midnight and 8 a.m. Tuesday, call MCSO at 772-220-7060 or submit an anonymous tip to Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at 1-800-273-TIPS.
