EATON COUNTY, MI – A Michigan police officer shot and killed a 30-year-old man during a pursuit on Tuesday, Dec. 30.

The 30-year-old man, who was not identified by police, was fatally shot after he allegedly said he had a gun while fleeing from the officer, the Eaton Rapids Police Department said in a news release.

Police said the shooting happened Tuesday night after the man fled from an attempted traffic stop in Eaton Rapids. The officer attempted to pull over a vehicle at 9:50 p.m. on Main Street, and the vehicle fled and crashed near the intersection with Canal Street.

The 30-year-old male driver and a female passenger reportedly got out of the crashed vehicle and ran from the scene, and the officer pursued the man on foot. Police said the man ignored repeated commands from the officer during the pursuit.

The man allegedly told the officer he had a gun, and the officer shot the suspect, according to the police department. The man was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The police department said it will release more details about the incident once a further review can be conducted. The case has been handed over to Michigan State Police (MSP) for investigation.

The involved officer is on administrative leave pending MSP’s investigation.
