For years, hospitals and medical practices competed for visibility on Google’s first page. Today, a growing number of prospective patients are taking a different path. Instead of typing keywords into a search engine, they’re asking artificial intelligence (AI) platforms direct questions.
“Who is the best orthopedic surgeon in Fort Lauderdale?”
“Where can I find a cardiologist in South Florida who specializes in heart failure?”
“Which hospitals near Miami offer robotic-assisted surgery?”
Rather than scrolling through pages of search results, users increasingly expect AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity to provide direct answers, often naming specific hospitals, physicians, practices and healthcare providers.
For hospitals and medical practices, this raises an important question: When someone asks AI about your specialty or service, does your organization become part of the answer?
The shift isn’t simply changing how people search for healthcare. It’s changing how hospitals, health systems and medical practices establish authority online. While traditional Search Engine Optimization (SEO) remains essential, organizations must also consider Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), the practice of strengthening the signals AI platforms use to determine which sources they trust and cite.
AI Doesn’t Just Index Information. It Evaluates Authority and Reputation.
Traditional search engines primarily rank webpages. AI-powered search attempts to synthesize information and provide users with a direct answer.
That means visibility depends on more than keywords. AI platforms can evaluate credibility signals including authoritative educational content, physician thought leadership, media interviews and expert commentary, bylined articles, speaking engagements, professional leadership, awards and recognition, accurate website structure, local profiles and a consistent digital presence.
For Florida healthcare organizations, it isn’t enough to have a website that lists services and physicians. Hospitals and practices need to demonstrate expertise in the specific areas where they want to be recognized.
Specialization Can Create an Opportunity
Independent practices and specialty groups may assume they cannot compete online with larger health systems with significantly larger marketing budgets. AI-powered search may create a different opportunity.
When a patient asks a highly specific question about a condition, treatment or procedure, AI isn’t necessarily looking for the largest health care organization. It is looking for credible, relevant information that helps answer the question.
A gastroenterology practice, for example, could build authority by consistently publishing useful information about colonoscopies, inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal cancer screening and digestive disorders. An orthopedic practice could focus on joint replacement, sports injuries, arthritis and minimally invasive procedures.
The same principle applies to hospitals and health systems. Rather than positioning every service line equally, organizations can build authority around specialized areas where they already have significant expertise and clinical resources.
A hospital with a strong cardiovascular program, for example, could develop authoritative content around heart disease, cardiac procedures, prevention and rehabilitation, while its physicians provide expert commentary on new research through media interviews, bylined articles, webinars and professional conferences.
Over time, this concentrated body of expertise can strengthen an organization’s digital authority and help AI platforms recognize its physicians and services when related questions arise.
Building Authority Requires More Than SEO
SEO remains an important foundation for helping search engines understand and index content. But AI platforms also look beyond what a healthcare organization says about itself.
Independent validation can include physicians being quoted by journalists, publishing bylined articles, speaking at medical conferences, holding leadership positions in professional organizations, earning respected healthcare awards, receiving patient reviews and participating in educational webinars and podcasts. Robust physician profiles, FAQs and patient education resources also help establish a clear body of expertise.
This is where public relations becomes increasingly relevant to AEO. Earned media, thought leadership and expert commentary can contribute to the broader authority signals AI platforms evaluate when determining which organizations and experts are relevant to a particular question.
The strongest AEO strategies bring these efforts together: technical SEO, authoritative content, digital outreach, social media, earned media, reputation management and third-party recognition.
Preparing for the Next Generation of Healthcare Marketing
Healthcare has always been built on credibility, expertise and trust. AI-powered search is evaluating those qualities through a digital lens.
Hospitals, health systems and medical practices that consistently educate their audiences, demonstrate specialized expertise and build recognition across credible sources are positioning themselves for how patients increasingly discover healthcare information and providers.
The question is no longer whether AI will influence how patients find healthcare providers. It’s whether your organization is building the authority necessary to become part of the answer.
