Charli xcx has moved to clarify her recent “dancefloor is dead” lyric.

The UK singer made her blockbuster return earlier this year, sharing the guitar-heavy song ‘Rock Music’. A seismic shfit away from her internationally successful 2024 album ‘BRAT’, it contains the lyric: “I think the dancefloor is dead / So now we’re making rock music…”

Expanding on this in a subsequent VOGUE interview, Charli said: “If I’d made another album that felt more dance-leaning, it would have felt really hard, really sad, but what’s interesting for me is to bend the possibilities of what my perspective on that could be. For me, it’s fun to flip the form. We know there’s gonna be people who are bothered by it, but that’s fine.”

The lyric went viral, sparking a huge conversation on social media. Now Charli xcx has given a further interview – this time to Rolling Stone in America – offering a bit more clarity on her intentions.

Pointing to her husband George Daniel’s acclaimed electronic-leaning label dh2, Charli said: “That lyric is very much about my relationship with ‘Brat’, and my personal experience with that album. My husband runs a dance-music label. There’s been such a wealth of incredible dance/electronic-adjacent records that have been coming out recently, whether it’s Slayyyter or Underscores or PinkPantheress. Dance music is in an incredible place.”

Expanding on her creative processes, Charli xcx explained that new album ‘Music, Fashion, Film’ will be the polar opposite of ‘BRAT’ – because that’s just how she operates. “All of my albums work in opposites. They repel against each other, and that’s the connective tissue. I knew when I was making ‘Brat’ that I was never going to make that record again. It’s not creatively rewarding for me to make the same thing twice.”
