Florida lands commitment from 2026 DL JaReylan McCoy

Florida has landed a commitment from 2026 defensive lineman JaReylan McCoy.

McCoy is a 6-foot-6, 245-pound edge rusher from Tupelo High School in Tupelo, Mississippi. He chose the Gators over Texas and LSU. He makes the third commitment of the weekend, joining 4-star wide receiver Marquez Daniel, who committed on Saturday morning, and running back Carsyn Baker, who committed on Saturday. 

McCoy took an official visit to Florida on May 30 to June 1. Prior to the visit, he had set a commitment date for July 1 along with his top three schools in Florida, Texas and LSU.

With his commitment coming early, the official visit along with an unofficial visit back to Gainesville ignited the process that led to pledging with the Gators.

“They made me feel like family when I first got there,” McCoy previously told Swamp247.

That unofficial visit to Florida scheduled for June 13 came in place of what was originally a scheduled official visit to Texas. 

McCoy is a former LSU commit, as he committed to the Tigers on Jan. 2 at the Under Armour All-American Game. Just over a month later, he decommitted from LSU.

Since then, Florida has only built more and more momentum. He made the trip to Gainesville in March, and came back for another visit for the Orange and Blue spring game in April.

On Florida’s end, what makes McCoy such an attractive recruit to the staff is his versatility. That being said, the staff has been in heavy pursuit of the Mississippi defensive lineman. 

McCoy has built a strong relationship with Billy Napier, defensive lineman coach Gerald Chatman, edge rushers’ coach Mike Peterson and inside linebackers’ quality control coach Cannon Gibbs.

“They got something good going here,” McCoy said. “They’re trying to get the best of the best here, and around each other.”

McCoy is a recruit that has the size to both line up on the interior defensive line, but can also come off the edge given both his size and mobility. However, his mobility also allows him to drop back into coverage if needed.

The staff has made him well aware that there would be multiple different opportunities to get on the field, perhaps early.

“They see me being a drop back in coverage type of guy, rush up, I can play three technique, too,” McCoy said. “It was pretty cool.”

Not to mention, after the 2025 season, Florida will be losing multiple veteran defensive linemen including Caleb Banks and Tyreak Sapp. Having a versatile defensive lineman like McCoy can help fill gaps in the depth chart in multiple spots.

With the momentum Florida has had through the spring with McCoy, it was critical that the Gators’ staff finished on this recruitment, especially fresh off an official visit. Being that the decision came earlier than anticipated, this is a big victory for the Florida staff.

In addition, beating out two other SEC schools, one of which McCoy was formerly committed to, is also considerable.
