How much forest are we willing to lose in the name of development? 🌳
Since 2014, India has approved the diversion of over 173,000 hectares of forest land for mining, highways, railways, transmission lines, hydropower and other infrastructure projects.
That’s an area almost the size of an entire country like Mauritius.
According to analyses based on government data:
• Forest diversion reached a 10-year high in 2023–24.
• More than 2.8 million trees were approved for felling on forest land between July 2023 and May 2026.
• Some of the country’s most ecologically important landscapes, including Hasdeo Arand and Great Nicobar, continue to be at the centre of the development-versus-conservation debate.
Development is essential.
But the real question is:
Can we build the future without destroying the ecosystems that sustain it?
