Lucid Answers to Controversy, Says It’s ‘Actively Reviewing All Recent Lease-end Charges’ – EV

Lucid Motors said it is working with its finance partner Bank of America to review all recent lease-end charges, following complaints from US customers over unexpectedly high final bills.

In a statement sent to EV, the California-based brand admitted that “in some cases, our communication, inspection, and billing processes did not meet the standards of transparency and fairness that we hold ourselves to.”

Lucid’s response comes after EV reported on Tuesday on growing criticism from US lease customers who shared their experiences on Reddit and owners’ forums.

Lucid acknowledged that “some customers have encountered concerns or confusion during the lease-return process” and apologized for “any frustration or inconvenience caused.”

The company said it is “actively reviewing all recent lease-end charges to ensure they are accurate, appropriate, and consistent with our published policies.”

The EV maker added that it is “working closely with our finance and inspection partners to improve clarity in pre-inspection reports, final billing, and the overall return experience.”

Customers who believe a charge may be inaccurate are encouraged to contact Lucid Financial Services for a review, Lucid said.

One customer said earlier this week he was left “shocked and confused” after receiving a $4,484 final bill that included $1,688 in estimated property tax, $2,400 in excess wear and tear fees, a $450 termination charge, and $306 in sales tax.

The same customer said he had already paid state excise taxes and disputed most of the charges except for the $450 lease return fee, describing the experience as “extremely frustrating.”

Lucid’s lease program operates under Lucid Financial Services, with financing provided by Bank of America, which also contracts third-party companies for vehicle inspections.

Several customers have reported delays of weeks between vehicle turn-in and inspection, followed by large “excess wear and tear” assessments — sometimes totaling several thousand dollars.

One owner said they were charged $1,825 for minor windshield chips and a sun visor, while others cited bills of $3,000 for wheel scuffs or $5,750 for damage identified months after vehicle return.

In a message shared online earlier this week, a salesperson told a potential customer that upper management was addressing the issue, calling it “an ongoing problem” that the company is “working on and taking care of.”

Another employee said the topic had been discussed during “week-long meetings in Arizona.”

A separate post on the owner’s forum mentioned a $1,230 for Excess wear and tear and a $585 for a “small dent.”

Additionally, the bill also included another $650 for a charging cable despite the sales representative telling the customer he could keep it as it was part of a promotion.

“As for the charging cable — when I returned my car, the Lucid rep told me it was mine to keep because it was part of a promotion when I leased the car,” the customer wrote.

“I even asked him twice to confirm, and he said “no worries.” So I kept it (though honestly, I have no idea why I’d even need it now). And yet… I got charged $650 for a “missing cable,”” he added.

Full statement from Lucid Motors:

We recognize that some customers have encountered concerns or confusion during the lease-return process, and we want to acknowledge those experiences directly.

We sincerely apologize for any frustration or inconvenience caused.

Lucid is actively reviewing all recent lease-end charges to ensure they are accurate, appropriate, and consistent with our published policies.

We are also working closely with our finance and inspection partners to improve clarity in pre-inspection reports, final billing, and the overall return experience.
