Max’s ‘The Last of Us’ Snags ‘Best Adaptation’ at the Video Game Awards

Max’s The Last of Us, based on the blockbuster survival game, won Best Adaptation at the Video Game Awards on Thursday.

In addition to the post-apocalyptic drama, the Best Adaptation category included nominees Gran Turismo, Castlevania: Nocturne, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and Twisted Metal

Showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckman adapted the 2013 video from Naughty Dog for TV. When The Last of Us premiered on Max in January, fans of the video game were stunned at how many scenes mirrored the game shot-for-shot.

The show’s cast also included voice and motion-capture actors like Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker who played Ellie and Joel, respectively, in the original game.

The Last of Us – both the show and the video game – follows hardened smuggler Joel Miller, played by Pedro Pascal, who finds himself traveling cross-country with the young Ellie, played by Bella Ramsey, in search of a revolutionary group called The Fireflies. The group hopes that  Ellie’s immunity to a vicious virus that’s nearly wiped out humankind could help create a cure.

The Last of Us season two is expected to premiere in 2025
