Netflix’s Next Video Game Adaptation Recruits ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Star

This month will see the release of the latest series in HBO’s Game of Thrones empire, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, but one of its stars has already lined up her next big job. Per a new report, Tanzyn Crawford has been tapped to join Netflix’s latest high-profile video game adaptation, Assassin’s Creed. She’s the latest regular cast member to take the leap of faith into the Toby Wallace and Lola Petticrew-led series amid a flurry of additions over the past two months. Production is finally set to get underway on the long-gestating historical series later this year in Italy.

Also a regular on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, where she’ll play Tanselle, Crawford’s role in Assassin’s Creed is being kept under wraps at this time, as is the case for most everyone aboard the series so far. She joins fellow regulars Zachary Hart and Laura Marcus. With two major franchises now booked, the Australian actress’s star is continuing to rise quickly after a breakout performance as Kathryn Hahn‘s daughter on the Emmy-nominated Hulu drama Tiny Beautiful Things in 2023. That same year, she also enjoyed a brief appearance in the M. Night Shyamalan Apple TV series Servant, and, more recently, landed a leading role in the Australian drama Swift Street. Assuming she survives Season 1, which premieres on January 18, the aforementioned Game of Thrones series, based on George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, will keep her busy for the foreseeable future, as it’s already been renewed for Season 2.

Finer details of Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed series are being kept under wraps, but it’s described as a “high-octane thriller” centered on the everlasting secret war between two factions — the Templar Order and the Assassin Brotherhood. One fights to shape the path of mankind through control, using all-powerful artifacts, while the other fights for humanity’s free will. The games have unfolded across countless historical settings, from the Holy Land during the Third Crusade to Renaissance Italy, colonial America, French Revolution-era Paris, Ancient Egypt, and beyond, as both sides have fought to change the tides in their favor throughout time. Developed by Ubisoft, the franchise has become one of gaming’s most successful franchises in history, selling more than 230 million units across countless titles, including the recent Japan-set Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Don’t expect to see any familiar faces from the source material, though, as the characters in Netflix’s take are expected to be entirely new to the franchise.

Who Is at the Helm for ‘Assassin’s Creed’?

Netflix and Ubisoft have been trying to make an Assassin’s Creed series since 2020, though the pieces are falling into place to finally make it a reality. Johan Renck, best known for his work behind the camera on the acclaimed Chernobyl, has been tapped to direct the series, with Roberto Patino and David Wiener set as showrunners. Both Patino and Wiener are also set to serve as executive producers alongside Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, Austin Dill, and Genevieve Jones for Ubisoft Film & Television, and Matt O’Toole.
