Climate scenarios describe different plausible future conditions based on varying assumptions about greenhouse gas emissions, socio-economic development and policy choices. This guidance uses shared socio-economic pathways as the primary climate scenario framework for selecting and interpreting future climate conditions.

Shared socio-economic pathways are a scenario framework developed by the international research community (Moss et al. 2010; O’Neill et al. 2013; Riahi et al. 2017) and adopted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to explore how different socio‑economic development pathways may influence future greenhouse gas emissions, climate change and adaptation challenges.
