Senate Democrats Champion Bill To Increase Housing Supply and Lower Costs as Trump tells Americans “No One Gives a [Bleep] About Housing”
Senate Democrats today championed passage of a bill to meaningfully increase new housing construction to reduce rental and homeownership costs, make it more affordable for more Americans to buy a home, and rein in corporations. Democrats have worked to make housing more affordable for years, forcing Republicans to take meaningful action to help Americans afford to buy or rent a home amid Trump’s housing crisis.
The housing crisis has gotten worse under Trump. Existing-home sales were down in February compared to last year, and houses are sitting on the market for longer periods of time due to high prices. Trump’s war of choice in Iran has spiked inflation concerns, and now mortgage rates are rising again. Meanwhile, this week, Trump reportedly told House Speaker Mike Johnson that “no one gives a [bleep] about housing.”
In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:
“While Donald Trump wages his reckless war of choice with Iran and ignores the cost of living, Senate Democrats forced Republicans to the table to pass common-sense legislation to make housing more affordable for Americans. Republicans are now threatening to block this bipartisan bill while Trump does nothing to stop them. Trump’s illegal trade war has driven up costs and made homeownership a pipedream for millions of young people and families, yet he continues to mock Americans’ concerns about cost of living, telling them point blank that he doesn’t care about lowering housing costs. Democrats will continue to fight for everyday Americans by working to lower prices and make housing affordable so that owning a home isn’t out of reach.”
Most Americans rank the cost of housing as one of their top concerns, and 93% of Americans say housing costs are too high. Trump’s own pollster says housing affordability is a major issue for voters, especially young people. Meanwhile, a majority of Americans feel homeownership is out of reach, and 1 in 4 Americans are delaying major purchases like buying a home.
