TDOT to widen Thompson Lane as Murfreesboro growth drives traffic

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WZTV) — As Murfreesboro continues to grow, so does the traffic on Thompson Lane.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is preparing to begin construction on a major widening project designed to improve traffic flow along one of the city’s busiest corridors.

The project will widen approximately 4.5 miles of North Thompson Lane, stretching from Northwest Broad Street to Memorial Boulevard. The roadway, which currently has one lane in each direction, will be expanded into a five-lane corridor with two travel lanes in each direction and a center turn lane where appropriate. The project also includes sidewalks on both sides of the road, upgraded traffic signals and other safety improvements.

TDOT officials say the improvements are needed to keep pace with Murfreesboro’s rapid growth.

“We see such rapid growth in this community,” TDOT Region 3 Communications Officer Erin Ziggler said. “We know the need is there.”

According to TDOT, about 26,000 vehicles travel Thompson Lane each day, and officials say that number is expected to continue increasing as new neighborhoods, schools and businesses are built nearby.

Construction activities are expected to begin as early as August or September, although drivers may initially notice crews performing utility relocation work before major road construction begins.

TDOT says it is working to reduce disruptions during construction. Under the construction contract, most lane closures while school is in session will only be allowed between 8 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., avoiding the busiest morning and afternoon commute times.

The project is expected to be completed in summer 2030.

Before construction begins, TDOT is inviting residents to learn more about the project during a public informational meeting.

The meeting will be held:

• Date: Monday, July 27
• Location: Siegel Elementary School
• Purpose: Meet with TDOT officials, the contractor, project designers and right-of-way representatives, view project plans and ask questions about construction and potential impacts.

For those unable to attend, TDOT says project updates, newsletters and contact information are available through the Thompson Lane project page on the agency’s website. Officials also plan to provide regular updates throughout construction.
