Tesla Crashes Into Doral Liquor Store; Driver Cites Self-Driving

A Tesla smashed through the glass doors of a liquor store in Doral, Florida, and its driver told police she had been trying to use the car’s self-driving mode when it suddenly accelerated.

It happened on Wednesday at Corner Wine and Spirits in the Downtown Doral shopping center, Local 10 News reported. Surveillance video shows the car breaking through the store’s entrance and coming to a stop inside.

She Got a Ticket

Nobody was hurt. According to the Doral Police Department, the driver said she was attempting to use the self-driving mode when the Tesla suddenly accelerated into the store. Officers gave her a citation.

The store reopened on Thursday with wooden boards over its broken doors.

Police haven’t released the driver’s name, the Tesla model or what the citation was for, and her account of what the car did hasn’t been verified.

The Same Day, Another Tesla Hit a Store

On the same afternoon, across the country, a gray Tesla crashed into the front of a 99 Ranch grocery store in Cupertino, California, injuring an older woman, according to Hoodline and KRON4. Fire officials said they couldn’t tell whether the car was in self-driving mode.

Tesla’s system is officially called Full Self-Driving (Supervised), and Tesla says the driver has to stay attentive and ready to take over at all times. Store crashes are common across every brand, though, and they’re often caused by drivers hitting the accelerator instead of the brake.

Tesla has had a rough month on the road. Earlier this month, police in New Jersey never mentioned Autopilot in a fatal crash report, but Tesla says it was engaged.
