Tesla’s Cybertruck Denied Entry into EU Due to Safety Compliance Issues

US Forces Customs in Europe and Africa (USAREUR-AF) have announced that Tesla’s Cybertruck will not be permitted for import or registration in the European Union, citing non-compliance with regional auto safety regulations. This decision was shared on Reddit by a user and subsequently confirmed by the agency in response to a community inquiry.

The USAREUR-AF clarified that the Cybertruck fails to meet several key safety standards required in the EU, including concerns over its “sharp-edged, stiff stainless-steel body.” EU regulations mandate features such as impact protection zones and speed limiters for vehicles exceeding a weight of 3.5 tons. Furthermore, EU guidelines prioritize the protection of vulnerable road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists.

In an attempt to explore potential avenues, the USAREUR-AF reached out to the German Federal Ministry of Transport regarding the Cybertruck’s compliance. However, the inquiry revealed that the vehicle deviates significantly from existing legal requirements, making it impossible to obtain national vehicle approval in Germany or across the EU. Officials noted that allowing a Cybertruck on public roads would divert attention away from the intended purpose of USAREUR-AF cover plates, which are designed primarily for force protection.

As a result, the customs agency has determined that they will not issue import certificates for the Cybertruck. Personnel considering importing the vehicle could face shipping it back to the United States at their own cost if they go ahead with the process.

In the United States, Tesla’s Cybertruck has faced its share of challenges. Earlier this year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a recall for nearly all delivered units due to issues with the exterior panel. This recall affected over 46,000 vehicles manufactured until February 27, 2025. However, a subsequent NHTSA evaluation awarded the Cybertruck a five-star rating, excelling in frontal and side crash tests as well as rollover risk assessments.

To stimulate demand for the Cybertruck, Tesla has been actively expanding its offerings. The company introduced a trade-in program for the vehicle this year, allowing customers to exchange their Cybertruck for a new or used Tesla, which was not previously allowed for one year post-purchase. Reports have indicated steep depreciation of more than 30% shortly after purchase.

In a bid to further entice buyers, Tesla has rolled out financing options, including 0% APR for Cybertruck purchases, bundling Full Self Driving (FSD) features. Additionally, the introduction of the ‘Luxe Package’ for the Model S, Model X, and Cybertruck provides incentives such as free lifetime Supercharging and Premium Connectivity, although it raises the vehicle prices by approximately $15,000.
