LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The Hispanic Student Society has been a part of Texas Tech since 1964, and leaders of the organization are making sure newcomers get the most out of what it can offer.

Sam Davila has spent her entire college career as a member of the Texas Tech Hispanic Student Society.

She says the organization, which has roots dating back to 1964, has a lot to offer students.

“We do things in certain branches like our academic and mentorship branch,” Davila said. “We do study nights that we get food for and things like that. We have a fundraising branch, so we’ll do fundraisers on and off campus.”

But that’s just scratching the surface. Davila now acts as the group’s external vice president and says with so many branches and members, there are plenty of opportunities for everyone to get involved.

“Being able to build those connections, not only within our group but outside of our group, is very important,” Davila said. “That’s why I believe that we do such a good job of encapsulating something for everybody, because of the diversity within our organization.”

Davila jumped in headfirst when she joined the society her freshman year. She’s been able to take part in fundraisers helping multiple organizations and has also taken on the role of recruiting students, in the hopes of letting them thrive here in Lubbock.

“Being able to have all those people, even if they’re not from here, even if they don’t look like us, just having a group of people that want to experience and emphasize the culture that we bring as individuals, is 100% important to have a hub for,” Davila said.

Those looking to take part and enrich their campus experience can join through the society’s website.

Davila believes the organization hosts a welcoming and inclusive environment for Red Raiders, and wants her last year as a member to be the best one yet.

“I believe that when my time at Texas Tech comes to an end, I wouldn’t have changed a thing,” Davila said. “Especially with this group, I wouldn’t have changed a single thing.”
