First responders knocked down a fire at a tire recycling center in South Gate that sent a large plume of dark smoke over the surrounding area and prompted a shelter-in-place order Sunday, May 24.
Firefighters responded around 2:15 p.m. to the 11800 block of Industrial Avenue, where a single-story industrial building was fully engulfed in flames, said Capt. Aaron Katon with the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Authorities later learned it was a tire recycling center.
No injuries were reported and no evacuations were ordered as firefighters battled the blaze.
However, the South Gate Police Department issued a temporary shelter-in-place order for the surrounding community.
“People and pets should stay indoors with doors and windows closed,” County Supervisor Janice Hahn said.
The cause of the fire was not immediately clear.
Smoke from the fire could be seen in region including in Paramount and Compton.
