Trump’s favorability is narrowly positive in Alabama: poll

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — President Donald Trump has a slight net positive favorability rating in Alabama, despite low support nationwide, according to a new Alabama Daily News and Gray Television poll.

In a statewide survey of 500 likely general election voters, 49.8% said they had a favorable opinion of the president compared with 46.4% who had an unfavorable view of Trump. About 4% said they had no opinion.

That leaves Trump with a net favorability rating of +3.4 in Alabama.

Alabama’s numbers stand in contrast to a Marist poll from Sept. 23, which found that just 37% of registered voters across the country had a favorable opinion of him versus 58% with an unfavorable impression of the president.

Trump maintains a strong image among Republicans in the state, with 86% of GOP respondents saying they had a favorable opinion of the president compared to just 14% who viewed him unfavorably.

Alabama Republican voters also view Trump more favorably than GOP gubernatorial nominee and U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, according to the poll. The president has a net favorability rating of +72 among GOP voters compared to Tuberville’s +64.

But the president has a net -45 favorability rating among independent voters in the state, with 24% viewing him in a positive light and 69% with an unfavorable opinion of him.

Alabama Democrats overwhelmingly dislike the president, with about 90% saying they have an unfavorable opinion of Trump.

Birmingham and Mobile voters hold the most favorable opinion of Trump, with 52% of surveyed voters in each area saying they had a favorable view of him. Montgomery is the only major area in the state where the president has a net negative favorability rating.

In the capital city, 53% of voters viewed the president unfavorably compared to 45% who had a favorable opinion of Trump, according to the statewide survey. That’s a -8 net favorability rating.

Among undecided voters in the gubernatorial race between Tuberville and Democratic former U.S. Sen. Doug Jones, Trump maintains a net 16-point positive favorability rating.

But for respondents who named inflation and the cost of living as their top concerns ahead of Election Day, 42% had a positive opinion of the president compared to 54% who had a negative opinion.

Trump is much more popular among men than women in the state. The president has a net +14-point favorability rating among male voters, while he has a net -6 rating among female voters.

Black Alabama voters overwhelmingly had a negative opinion of the president, with 81% of them viewing him as unfavorable. By comparison, 35% of white voters said they had an unfavorable opinion of Trump and 64% had a favorable one.

The poll shows male voters ages 55 and older and men without a college degree had the most favorable opinion of Trump in the state across age, gender and education levels.

Generally, 52% of respondents said they would vote for the Republican candidate if the election were held today, 38% said they would vote for the Democrat and 11% were undecided. That gives the state an R+14 lean, similar to the average lead of Republican candidates in statewide races.

The statewide survey was conducted on Oct. 16 and 17 and has a margin of error of ±4.38%.
