AG: 1 dead, officer injured during Ashland traffic stop shooting

The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office announced Monday night that it is investigating a shooting on Main Street involving Ashland police.

According to officials, Ashland police were conducting a traffic stop when a man pulled a gun and exchanged gunfire with officers.

Investigators said the man shot one officer during the exchange. The man was also shot and later pronounced dead at the scene.

The injured officer is being treated at a local hospital.

The attorney general’s office said there is no known threat to the public.

The identity of the man who was killed has not been released pending notification of next of kin. The identities of the officers involved are also being withheld until formal interviews are conducted.

News 9 spoke with neighbors who said they saw dozens of emergency vehicles on the street.

“I saw the fire department back out, and a, they have a small emergency vehicle, I guess you call it. And they backed it across the road with all the lights going,” said Vickie Jacobson. “When I stepped out my front door, all these lights, blue lights, fire trucks, lots of activity just a little bit further down the street from me.”

Officials said they are working to determine whether any officers had body camera or cruiser footage of the incident. They are also working to determine the sequence of the gunfire exchange.

Main Street in front of the Ashland Fire Department remains blocked as the investigation continues.

An autopsy will be conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner at a later date.
