Jocelyn Benson wins Democratic Governor nomination

Jocelyn Benson, Michigan Secretary of State, secured the Democratic gubernatorial primary nomination, defeating Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson Tuesday. The Associated Press declared Benson the winner at 9 p.m. on Aug.4. The race was declared with only 17% of the votes in, and Benson obtained 84.5% of the vote to Swanson’s 15.5%. 

Benson has served as Michigan’s Secretary of State since 2019. She has campaigned on expanding affordable housing and healthcare, strengthening public education and promoting responsible data center development. 

Swanson has served as the Genesee County Sheriff since his election in 2020. His platform consisted of aiding the working class, investing in early education and improving public safety. He received endorsements from several labor unions and The Detroit News. 

Benson received endorsements from several prominent Democrats, including former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, U.S Representative Hillary Scholten, former U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg as well as several labor organizations, including United Auto Workers and Michigan AFL-CIO. 

In her victory speech Tuesday night, Benson thanked her supporters and emphasized her goal of putting everyday Michiganders first as she heads into the general election. 

“I am so thrilled to stand before you as the Democratic Party’s nominee to be the next governor of Michigan,” Benson said. “Tonight the general election begins. Tonight marks our opportunity to grow our coalition to include citizens in every corner of our state who believe, as we do, that the power of the people must always be greater than the people in power.”

During a speech at the Garden Theater following Benson’s victory, Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield congratulated her and highlighted Benson’s commitment to Detroit and the state. 

“We need leaders like Jocelyn,” Sheffield said. “Who will fight for the people, we will stand with the people, and who will deliver for the people. Not just for the wealthy and the well-connected but every hardworking Michigander.”

Benson will face Republican nominee in the Nov. 3 general election to determine Michigan’s next governor.
