Governor Gavin Newsom released a statement emphasizing the importance of supporting neighborhood retailers, restaurants, and service providers for Small Businesses Saturday.
“Small businesses are central to California’s economic strength and cultural identity,” Newsom said. “They’re not just storefronts — they’re dreams, risks, and livelihoods.”
Small Business Saturday was created to celebrate the role of small businesses and to offer a chance to uplift these enterprises during the holiday season.
California’s small businesses employ nearly half of the state’s workforce and account for more than 99.8% of all businesses.
Minority-owned businesses make up nearly 60% of these, contributing significantly to the state’s economy, which ranks among the largest globally.
The California Office of the Small Business Advocate (CalOSBA) supports these businesses through programs like SCALE, which has helped create over 84,000 jobs and launch 13,900 new businesses since its inception seven years ago.
CalOSBA is also celebrating Small Business Saturday with the slogan “Supporting Small Strengthens Us All,” sharing tips from business advisors to help small retailers maximize the holiday shopping season.
