Featuring an expansive open world, a building system distinct from its battle royale counterpart, and various survival mechanics to learn, LEGO Fortnite can be a bit daunting when you’re just getting started. Though you’re paired with a LEGO companion who’ll teach you some basics, other gameplay elements can only be learned through trial and error. Thankfully, we’ve made all of those mistakes for you!

Though LEGO Fortnite is full of vibrant colors and adorable characters, you’ll quickly need to get your bearings if you hope to survive in this new survival adventure. While you’ll have seemingly endless options when you begin, here are a few things you should do just after starting your world.
As with most survival games, your success in LEGO Fortnite is largely dependent on the resources you can gather and the items you craft with those resources. However, when starting your journey, you’ll only have one tool at your disposal to harvest materials – your hands. While this is far from ideal, your hands are a surprisingly effective way to collect Granite and Wood.
Just like the various fruits and veggies scattered throughout the world, Granite and Wood can be found lying on the ground, but that isn’t the most reliable source. If you have trouble finding Wood as floor loot, search for bushes or the thin, white-colored trees in the Grasslands. Use your melee button to punch through the trees and bushes, and you’ll quickly begin to accumulate one of the core resources in LEGO Fortnite. When you have enough resources, build a Campfire to expand your list of building recipes.

While Granite and Wood are incredibly valuable in the early game, don’t neglect foraging for food, or you’ll soon succumb to your empty stomach. The two most common food items you can collect in the Grasslands without tools are Pumpkins and Raspberries, so search for them without straying too far from your Campfire.
The biggest hurdle you’ll have to overcome in the early game is surviving the frigid nighttime temperature and the various enemies that thrive after sunset. Because of this, you’ll want to stockpile food and remain relatively close to your Campfire. Not only will the Campfire keep you warm in the event of a storm, but you’ll also receive protection from your NPC companion.

As you unlock weapon recipes and learn how to endure extreme temperatures, you’ll soon be able to explore at night without issue.
Once you’ve built your first Campfire, you’ll unlock the Crafting Bench building recipe, but you’ll need to collect 3x Wood and 5x Granite to create this valuable workstation. By default, your Common Crafting Bench will enable you to make Torches, Forest Axes, and Pickaxes. With these tools, you can better harvest Wood and Granite, fend off wildlife, and explore darkened caves.
Still, while these tools are better than nothing, you’ll want to check the Crafting Bench menu to identify the resources required to upgrade your bench. As you upgrade your Crafting Bench, you’ll unlock new weapons and survival equipment recipes and learn how to make better tools.

After building your Crafting Workbench and a Simple Shack, you’ll unlock several building recipes, including the Village Square. While the Village Square’s description may make this build seem less vital than the Lumber Mill or Grill, it has three significant benefits.
Firstly, when the Village Square is built, an icon will appear on your map to indicate the location of your village. Without placing a Village Square or Map Marker, the only way to return to your camp after a day of hefty exploration is to memorize its location or hope the Campfire’s smoke trail is within render distance. The icon and color of the map marker can be customized to your liking.
Secondly, as soon as you’ve built your Village Square, your village will be visited by NPC Fortnite characters you can invite to live with you if you have an extra bed. Once a Villager has agreed to live with you, they can be assigned jobs, or you can ask them to accompany you for some exploration. Villagers can help you harvest resources, and they’re great bodyguards who can singlehandedly take down most of the wildlife you’ll encounter at the beginning of your journey.
Lastly, crafting the Village Square grants you access to Village Upgrades, which unlock rewards such as increased village capacity, new recipes, and more!

As you may have noticed when creating your LEGO Fortnite World, this Game Mode features several survival mechanics you’ll need to monitor as you explore, forage, hunt, and expand your village. In addition to the various threats lurking throughout the open world, the core survival elements you should be aware of include Hunger, Temperature, and Stamina. To learn about each of the survival elements in LEGO Fortnite, check out the table below:
| Survival Essentials Explained | ||
|---|---|---|
| Survival Element | Description | How to Improve |
| Hunger | You will automatically grow hungry over time, as indicated by the segmented circle surrounding your character thumbnail. Failing to eat for long enough will result in elimination. | As you may expect, all you need to do is eat! Some food items will satiate your hungry tummy more than others. |
| Temperature | Your character will feel the effects of extreme temperatures in different biomes. Being in extreme temperatures for too long will slowly eat away at your HP. Weather conditions such as rain also impact the temperature. |
|
| Stamina | You will expend Stamina when sprinting, swimming, or gliding. At this time, we have not found a method to permanently increase your Stamina. | Drink Slap Juice or eat Slap Berries. |
