Elon Musk rejected accusations that he is racist and disputed portrayals of his politics as far-right, clarifying in a recent interview that he supports “the normal people” and views secure borders, safe cities and restrained government spending as mainstream positions.
Musk Cites Family In Rejecting Racism Claims
“My partner is half Indian, and I have four children with her,” Musk told The Economist’s editor-in-chief Zanny Minton Beddoes last week. “One of them was named after a famous Indian physicist. So I would say I’m not racist.”
Musk referred to Neuralink executive Shivon Zilis and their son Strider Sekhar, whose middle name honors Nobel-winning astrophysicist Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar. He also pointed to senior executives “of all races” at his companies while addressing allegations tied to his posts about immigration and race, including a previous clash with investor Vinod Khosla.
Musk Rejects Far-Right Label And Defends Views
Beddoes challenged Musk over his support for right-wing and fringe political movements. “No, I support the normal people,” Musk replied. “What you call the far right falsely is the normal person.”
Musk asked which of his priorities — “secure borders,” “safe cities” and “sensible spending” — qualified as extremist. “The characterization of the far right is false and misleading and nonsense,” he said.
Political Activism Fuels Wider Controversy Across Europe
His defense follows years of increasingly direct political involvement across Europe. Musk backed Germany’s anti-immigration Alternative for Germany party, while AP found that his interactions on X amplified hard-right European figures. Its analysis of more than 20,000 posts from 11 accounts found Musk’s engagement sometimes lifted viewership between twofold and 40-fold.
The controversy has also crossed into entertainment. Musk previously called filmmaker Christopher Nolan “an anti-White racist” while criticizing Lupita Nyong’o’s casting as Helen of Troy in “The Odyssey,” then promoted plans for an AI-generated adaptation.
Asked whether he was anti-Muslim, Musk said he opposed admitting people whose views were “antithetical to Western beliefs.”
“I’m against rape and murder,” he said, “and the imposition of rules and laws that are contrary to what we’ve come to accept in the West.”
