Sophie Turner’s Lara Croft look revealed
The first photo of Sophie Turner in her upcoming role as Lara Croft has been revealed.
She was announced as the star of Prime Video’s Tomb Raider TV show in September, and the streamer said production on the series had now begun.
It released an image of the actress wearing the fictional archaeologist’s green tank top and brown shorts – a look inspired by the character’s appearance in the classic Lara Croft games on the original PlayStation.
Sophie previously said the role – which has been filled by Angelina Jolie and Oscar winner Alicia Vikander – had given her “massive shoes to fill”.
Sophie, who grew up in Warwickshire, shot to fame as Sansa Stark in HBO’s fantasy epic Game of Thrones, and went on to appear as Jean Grey in the X-Men films.
Tomb Raider will also star Alien actress Sigourney Weaver, the White Lotus’s Jason Isaacs and Celebrity Traitors contestant Celia Imrie.
Fleabag writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge is behind the script for the show.
It’s based on the hit video game series, first released in 1996 and originally developed by UK company Core Design.
At a time when female characters in games were rare, Lara became a sensation, featuring on magazine covers and becoming an icon for players worldwide.
The series was eventually rebooted in 2013, with Lara given a more grounded look and more emphasis placed on her characterisation.
Tomb Raider is the latest in a string of adaptations based on popular video games.
Amazon’s Prime Video service was behind the hugely successful Fallout, which recently debuted its second series.
The streamer also announced this week that Walking Dead actor Ryan Hurst would star as main character Kratos in its upcoming TV show based on PlayStation hit God of War.
Adaptations have been shown to drive players towards the games that inspired them, and current Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics announced two new games at last year’s Game Awards.
The first is a “re-imagining” of Lara’s first ever adventure with updated controls and graphics, while the second is a brand new story set in Northern India.
