I have to smile when I think about how many different directions hip-hop has taken me over the years. One minute I’m enjoying a smooth West Coast groove, the next I’m listening to something completely unpredictable, full of attitude, humour and ideas flying in every direction. And I wouldn’t want it any other way. The Goats – Tricks Of The Shade This 1992 album is a wild one, and that’s exactly what I enjoy about it. The Goats weren’t afraid to mix sharp political commentary with funky, sample-heavy production and a healthy dose of satire. There’s so much happening throughout this record that I find myself paying attention to the lyrics one moment and getting completely caught up in the beats the next. It’s clever, rebellious and wonderfully unconventional. Not every hip-hop album needs to follow the same rules, and this one certainly doesn’t. That’s part of what makes collecting this music so rewarding for me. Even after all these years, there’s always something that can surprise me. #NowPlaying #HipHopCollector
