The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a public health alert, specifically targeting meat and poultry products that contain FDA-regulated jalapeños that could be contaminated with salmonella.
According to a news release, the alert may expand to additional products as they are identified in the recall process. As of Sunday, August 9, 18 items are included in the recall and public health alert.
Recalls that specifically include Ohio are as follows:
Deli Kitchen’s Chipotle Cheddar Chicken Wrap (9.25 ounces), sold at Kroger/Dillons, with “Use By” dates from August 7 to August 13. The EST Number is P47081, and the products were sold in Ohio and 10 other states.
Wawa’s Spicy Chipotle Chicken Wrap (6.9 ounces), sold at Wawa, with “Use By” dates from August 6 to August 8. The EST is P47081, and the products were sold in Ohio and three other states.
Consumers are encouraged to check back regularly.
Problems, according to the alert, were discovered when the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notified the FSIS that multiple regulated establishments had received an FDA-regulated ingredient had been recalled, connected to a recall that stems from a salmonella outbreak.
According to an outbreak informational page on the FDA website, fresh jalapeños from Sinaloa, Mexico, and distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors have been recalled as part of the investigation into a salmonella outbreak.
As a result, several restaurant chains, including QDOBA and Chipotle, have switched their jalapeño suppliers and the FDA does not consider there to be an ongoing risk from either restaurant chain.
At this time, the FDA does not believe that Coast Citrus Distributors directly accesses grocery stores.

Anyone who eats food contaminated with salmonella could experience salmonellosis, a common foodborne bacterial illness. Common symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever within six hours to six days after eating contaminated products.
Illnesses could last from four to seven days, and some people could recover without treatment. However, some people may develop a severe illness, such as older adults, infants and those with weakened immune systems.
At this time, no illnesses related to the public health alert have been reported. However, it is noted that anyone who believes they have eaten a contaminated product should contact a health care provider.
Anyone with a recalled product is urged not to eat it and to immediately throw it away or return it to the place of purchase.

H-E-B’s Shake Rattle Bowl Southwest Chicken (9.75 ounces), sold at H-E-B, with “Use By” dates from August 7 to August 15. The EST Number is P34733 and was sold in Texas.
Higher Harvest for H-E-B’s Chicken and Beef Chimichurri (12 ounces) and Creamy Cilantro Chicken (13 ounces). Both were sold at H-E-B throughout Texas and include several “Use By” dates:

Meal Simple’s Pork Carnitas Bowl (11 ounces) and Chicken and Rice with Cilantro Jalapeno Sauce (12 ounces). Both were sold at H-E-B throughout Texas and include several “Use By” dates:
