Mattel Introduces First Whitney Houston Barbie Doll

Mattel has now released the ‘Barbie Signature Whitney Houston Doll,’ celebrating the singer’s career and legacy on what would have been her 63rd birthday. The release is part of a powerful legacy-building effort spanning a number of non-traditional avenues.

Whitney Houston has been immortalized in her first-ever Barbie doll, released on August 9th, which would have been the iconic singer’s 63rd birthday. The Barbie Signature Whitney Houston Doll celebrates the musician’s “record-breaking career, legacy, and timeless music that inspired generations of artists and continues to resonate with fans around the world.”

The Doll closely follows a string of ultra-creative Whitney innovations, including Whitney-themed slot machines sprinkled across casino floors in Vegas and beyond.

Created in collaboration with Whitney Houston’s sister-in-law and executor of her estate, Pat Houston, the doll memorializes the singer’s look in her “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)” music video in 1987. The doll wears a replica of Whitney’s purple tank dress with colorful drop earrings, vibrant eye makeup, and her own microphone stand.

The launch is timed to coincide with the 40th anniversary of Whitney Houston’s legacy. Throughout the year, Houston is being celebrated through honors such as the Recording Academy Special Merit Lifetime Achievement Award and the 2026 New Jersey Hall of Fame Capstone Event.

Sister-in-law and longtime Whitney manager Pat Houston says the doll is two decades in the making.

“Whitney had never really endorsed anything, and we started having conversations about her brand,” she said. “We talked about a Mattel doll 20 years ago.”

According to Pat, Whitney, who died in 2012 at the age of 48, was interested in a doll that celebrated her 1992 film The Bodyguard and its iconic soundtrack album. But even when that project didn’t pan out, Pat says Whitney “really wanted to invest the time in doing a doll.”

“I’m just really happy that we’re seeing this doll come to fruition, and it’s going to be a lasting influence across generations,” said Pat Houston. “I’m just honored to be in this place at this time, and we’re actually doing it.”

“I witnessed the care, I witnessed the creativity, and the commitment behind celebrating Whitney’s legacy,” she added. “It just made a very, very meaningful experience. I’m just very grateful to have been a part of a project that honors her artistry, her elegance, and her impact that she still has on the world.”

The doll retails for $60 and was first unveiled at the Fifth Legacy of Love Gala, an annual charity event hosted by the Whitney E. Houston Legacy Foundation, in Atlanta on August 8. It can be purchased in person at Target stores and online at Amazon, Walmart, Target, and Mattel Creations.
