Elk Grove candidate apologizes after social media posts

ELK GROVE, Calif. —

An Elk Grove Unified school board candidate is facing a backlash after offensive language in his social media posts has surfaced.

Kirk Thomson apologized for the tweets on Tuesday after support was pulled for him.

Thomson’s account on X, formerly known as Twitter, included posts with racial and homophobic slurs, and derogatory terms about people with disabilities. Posts are dated from 2025 and 2026.

His X account appears to have been deleted.

“Old posts from my personal Twitter account surfaced this week, and I used language that is hurtful to people with disabilities. That was wrong. I am genuinely sorry for it. No excuses. I own it,” Thomson said in a statement. “This isn’t abstract for me. My own child has a disability, and my family knows firsthand what it takes to get kids like ours the support they deserve. That’s why I’m running: for stronger special ed programs and real transparency from the EGUSD board.”

The Elk Grove Police Officers Association and Elk Grove School Board Trustee Heidi Moore have since rescind their support for Thomson. Elk Grove Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen also condemned Thomson’s posts.

Thomson is running for Trustee Area 2 against Michael Vargas, who is seeking reelection.
