DENVER – The best way to kick off the season is with some standout performances.

Wrapping up the Front Range Invite on Saturday, Colorado State’s swim and diving team closed their season opener with strong performances across the board. The Rams finished in second place overall, ending the meet with 725.5 points.

The Rams scored well at the meet claiming first place in multiple events including the 200-yard medley relay, 400 individual medley and when Tess Whineray secured first in the 100 back with a time of 54.63. Their strong performances set the pace for the competition showcasing their speed, precision and teamwork, proving they have scoring depth.

The relay squads once again displayed their strength dominating the pool with speed making a statement. Whineray, Claire Wright, Erin Dawson, and Lexie Trietley were at it again, securing first place in the 200 medley relay right of the gate, and the Rams capped the meet by winning the 400 free with the quad of Azalea Shepherd, Dawson, Mia Axelman and Trietley. Colorado State won all four relays at the meet.

“It was an area that we talked about in off season that we were going to have to get better if we really wanted to make noise at the conference level,” Woodard said. “I think we took a big step in that direction”

Freshman Quinn Whorley had an impressive showing in her debut, demonstrating strong performances across multiple events. She placed sixth in the 1,650 free with a time of 17.58.08 and earned fourth place in the 500 free on Friday. Whorley’s results show her potential and promise as a valuable contributor to the team moving forward.

“She did phenomenal. She came out right out of the gate” coach Christopher Woodward said. “I don’t know if she had something to prove, but she certainly did prove it.”

Momentum carried through the day as the team continued to excel through events. Dawson was a standout performer in this meet leading the charge by taking first in the 400 individual medley and securing second place in the 200 free.

Riley Lee and Sydney Ovesen demonstrated strong effort on the boards placing seventh and ninth on the 1-meter springboard with scores of 230.30 and 222.65, respectively. Maggie Di Scipio, Makenna Post, and Jacqueline Oh also put scores on the board for the diving team, helping the team’s overall standing.

The Rams’ energy was a driving force throughout the meet, fueling strong performances and maintaining momentum. The energy carried over into every event, encouraging teammates to push themselves and support one another, creating a positive and tight-knit atmosphere.

“The energy was high. We always talk about how we want to be one of the teams to win the deck,” Woodard said. “I think they fed on that energy in the water.”

Colorado State competes next Oct. 24, the first home meet of the season when it hosts Denver and Colorado Mesa at Edora Pool Ice Center.
