British music has lost one of its most distinctive voices.

Chris Rea, the singer and guitarist whose catalogue spanned blues, rock and pop for more than five decades, has died at the age of 74.

His family confirmed he passed away on Monday.

“It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Chris.

“He passed away peacefully in hospital earlier today following a short illness, surrounded by his family.”

Rea’s career was marked by a string of memorable songs that connected with listeners around the world. He released 25 studio albums over more than 50 years, selling over 40 million records.

Two of those albums, The Road to Hell and Auberge, reached No 1 on the UK Albums Chart, and tracks like ‘The Road to Hell (Part 2)’, ‘On the Beach’ and ‘Josephine’ remain classics of British rock.

But it’s the festive favourite ‘Driving Home for Christmas’ that has become an annual staple on radio playlists every December.

Originally released in 1986, the gentle, evocative song about the journey home for the holidays grew into one of the season’s most cherished tunes, charting again decades after its release.

Born in Middlesbrough in 1951, Rea was known for his warm, gravelly voice and expressive guitar work. His music drew on blues and rock traditions, giving his songs emotional depth and timeless appeal.

He also fought through major health challenges during his life, including pancreatic cancer and a stroke, but continued to record and connect with fans.

Rea’s influence on British music is undeniable, and his songs will continue to soundtrack moments in listeners’ lives for years to come. He is survived by his wife Joan and their two daughters.
