Andy Reid, Chiefs Hire New Coach After Missing NFL Playoffs

Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs have already made a number of significant coaching moves since their season ended. The Chiefs finished with a 6-11 record and missed the playoffs for the first time in the Patrick Mahomes era.

Running backs coach Todd Pinkston and wide receivers coach Connor Embree have both been fired. Defensive quality control coach Louie Addazio left the team to take on the offensive line coach position with the UNLV Rebels. Alex Whittingham, former assistant defensive line coach, also departed to join his dad, Kyle Whittingham, on the Michigan Wolverines coaching staff.

On Tuesday, the Chiefs made their first hire of the season. NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero revealed on Tuesday that the Chiefs have hired Chad O’Shea as their new wide receivers coach.

O’Shea joins the Chiefs after a six-year stint with the Cleveland Browns, where he served as the wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator. The 53-year-old has also had coaching stints with the Minnesota Vikings, New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins.

As Pelissero noted in his report, this will be O’Shea’s second stint with the Chiefs. He was hired as a volunteer assistant in 2003 before being promoted to assistant special teams coach. He left Kansas City in 2005.

The Chiefs had issues in their wide receiver room under Embree this past season. Mahomes had a number of potent weapons at wideout, including Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Hollywood Brown. None of them, however, played at a consistent enough level throughout the campaign. O’Shea comes in with a clear mission to improve this crucial area in the offense for 2026.

More changes are expected for the Chiefs. Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy’s contract has expired, and the veteran coach has already interviewed with other teams. He’s spoken with the Baltimore Ravens and the Tennessee Titans for their respective head coaching openings. The Chiefs are reportedly eyeing Eric Bieniemy of the Chicago Bears as Nagy’s potential replacement.
