Dept. of Health confirms travel-related dengue virus case on Oahu

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A case of dengue virus was confirmed in a patient on Oahu.

The Hawaii Department of Health identified a new travel-related case, which brings the total number of dengue cases in the state to nine since January.

Health officials confirm that there was no connection found between this case and any previous cases in the state.

The affected individual was exposed to dengue while traveling in a region where the virus is common.

State health teams have been deployed to the affected area to conduct inspections and implement mosquito control measures.

Health officials say that although the risk of transmission is low, this case is a reminder to reduce standing water, wherever possible, especially after a week of rainy weather.

Reducing standing water helps prevent mosquito breeding and can therefore reduce the risk of transmission to the public.

Healthcare providers and individuals who suspect dengue infection are advised to call the Disease Reporting Line at 808-586-4586.

More information about mosquito control is available on the Vector Control Branch (VCB) website.
