St. John’s Mexican Fiesta to return with music, dance and community tradition – The Lawrence Times

The 44th annual St. John’s Mexican Fiesta is right around the corner, celebrating Mexican culture and heritage in Lawrence through music, dance and food. 

Festivities begin at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 13 and run until 10 p.m. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Parish, 1234 Kentucky St. It’s free to attend. 

The event serves as a fundraiser for a Spanish-language program at St. John’s School and a scholarship fund supporting postsecondary education for Mexican youths in Lawrence. 

Local artist Eli Lugo will kick off the event at 4 p.m., followed by Kansas City dance troupe Grupo Folklórico Izcalli at 5:30 p.m. Topeka-based Conjunto Presidio will perform at 7 p.m., and Son Venezuela will close out the night at 8:30 p.m. 

DJ Romy Ruiz will host the evening, with 30-minute sets scheduled between performances.

Organizers will serve traditional foods including beef tostadas with a vegetarian option, rice made with chicken broth, beef and bean burritos, pork and bean burritos, pork tamales and enchiladas. Margaritas and beer will also be available.

Children’s activities will include carnival games, confetti eggs, Kona Ice and Carnival Cravings, which will offer classic carnival foods.
